5 Common Roof Problems to Fix Now

December 10, 2020 by Randy Schultz 2 Comments

common roof problems include repairing the shingles

Common roof problems should be fixed right away. After all, the roof of your house is one of the most important structural elements. It protects you from the extremities of the weather and keeps your place safe and comfortable.

Although common roof problems deserve immediate attention, many homeowners let problems continue. Age and weather can compromise the strength and condition of your home’s roofing. That’s why you need to be watchful about even the smallest signs of problems. While you may delay addressing some issues, other common roofing problems require immediate attention to prevent catastrophic damage.

Here are the top 5 common roof problems that you should address sooner rather than later.

Common Roof Problem #1: Leaks

A leaking roof is a common roof problem—and it can be one of the biggest nightmares for homeowners. Ignoring leaks can lead to extensive damage to the structure of the building, and you may eventually end up with massive roofing repair costs.

Any kind of roof leakage, therefore, should not be ignored. Look out for signs like stains on walls and ceilings and peeling or blistering of paint on the walls. While leaks may be easy to detect most times, you may require a professional inspection when you cannot locate its source.

Dry rot

Dry rot, as the name suggests, can occur even when the amounts of moisture are minimal. That’s why dry rot can be difficult to prevent.

Dry rot is caused by a fungus called Serpulalacrymans that can cause permanent damage to wood fibers and turn them soft. The bigger concern is that roof dry rot spreads up to 3 inches per day, which means that the problem can get out of control faster than you imagine. The sooner you get help from professionals, the easier it will be to address the situation.

Moss growth

Another seemingly small issue that you may overlook is moss growth in gaps between shingles. The growth can grow to a few inches thick in a wet climate.

This roof moss should have been fixed a long time ago. Unfortunately, this roof needs to be completely replaced.

Although the vegetation looks harmless on the surface, it stores moisture and transmits it deep within the roof. The water eventually seeps through the wood and can damage the entire roof. This can increase repair costs significantly.

Soft spots

Soft spots are another common roof problem that requires immediate attention. Soft spots often occur when water pools on the roof and damages it over time. The worst part is that most homeowners fail to detect them early because they seldom climb up on their roofs.

Proactive maintenance checks can save the problem from getting worse, because overlooking soft spots can even result in a need for roof replacement.

Common Roof Problem #5: Curling shingles

As your roof ages, you will probably notice the shingles curling at the corners. This is a clear indication that you need to replace the shingles right away.

In addition to curling shingles, be vigilant about the shingles losing granules. These granules make the roof fire-resistant, offer UV protection, and enhance the curb appeal of your house. Don’t delay! Replace curled shingles right away.

Remember, timely repair and maintenance for your roof goes a long way in saving money and maintaining the look of your home. In most cases, it is best to leave the job of roof repairs and maintenance to a professional you can trust.

I agree with this. If you see anything wrong with the shingles of your roof, it is important to replace them immediately. Delaying this will surely result to an even bigger problem. Thank you for this story, it was very helpful.
